Khujand is the city in the northern part of Tajikistan and the capital of Sughd region. It is situated in the picturesque valley of Syr Darya River at a height of more than 300 m above sea level.

Khujand is the largest industrial and cultural centre in Sughd region and the second-largest city in the republic with population of 167.900 (for 2013). There live representatives of more than 20 nationalities.

Nowadays Khujand is a transport hub of an important role and also a political, economic, cultural and scientific centre of the country.

International airport “Khujand”

The international airport “Khujand” (LBD) is 12 km far from the city. The airport serves more than 600 passengers a year. There are regularly scheduled direct international flights to the CIS countries, India, China and the UAE from the Khujand airport.

Railway station

There is a large railway station in Khujand, which connects the northern and the southern regions of the country. There is also a railway connection between Khujand and other near- and far-abroad regions. The total length of railways in the country is 943 km, 678 km of which are the main lines. The major part of international transportation is made by railway.

The construction of a new railway connection between Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan has been carrying on according to trilateral cooperation.

Highways

The main routes pass through Sughd region that serve freight and civil passenger traffic. The highway Dushanbe-Khujand-Chanak (354 km) passes through the region and connects the northern and southern regions of the republic. The highway Dushanbe-Khujand-Chanak includes several tunnels, the total length of which is more than 10 km. The route was reconstructed and put in to operation in 2012.

The reconstruction of the highway Aini-Panjakent (114 km) has been carrying on to date. The highway is strategically important for the economic recovery and in order to have the route to Samarkand (Uzbekistan) and to Asian Highway Network AH7.
